SUMMARY:Vonder Haar Center for the Performing Arts presents Pippi Longstocking
DESCRIPTION:Based on the beloved stories of Swedish author\, Astrid Lindgren\, this dance play\, written and directed by Tracy Vonder Haar and Logan Hutt\, showcases some of the adventures of that fiery redhead with the extreme pigtails.    Pippi\, who lives in a very small town\, shares her house\, Villa Villekulla\, with her monkey and her horse – but no adults. She befriends the two children living next door\, and the three have many adventures. Although Pippi lacks manners and education\, Tommy’s and Annika’s mother eventually appreciates that Pippi truly values her friendship with the pair above almost anything else.    This two-act original dance play is performed by dancers in the pre-professional training division at Vonder Haar Center for the Performing Arts. The cast includes Alexandra Wilson as Pippi\, Madeleine Franck as Annika\, Olivia Blaisdell as Tommy\, Bianca Bulgarelli as Alfonso\, and Sophia Wilson as Mr. Nilsson. Guest artists include Paul A. Brown and Logan Hutt. Company members fill in the other leading roles\, with support from students at the Center.    Performances will be June 23 at 7 PM and June 24 at 2:30 PM. Tickets range from $26 to $40\, and may be purchased by calling Vonder Haar Center for the Performing Arts at (818) 790-5775.

DESCRIPTION:     This free community concert is led by Conductor Fung Ho. Fung Ho was a former Concertmaster for the Burbank Chamber Orchestra and West LA Symphony. He is currently on the violin faculty at CalState LA and on the faculty at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts.    This concert features violist Brett Deubner\, viola professor of Temple University\, in the North American Premiere Performance of the Viola Concerto by contemporary composer Amanda Harberg. Ms. Harberg's music has been widely commissioned throughout the US and abroad. Other works by Glinka\, Mascagni\, and Mozart will also be performed.

DESCRIPTION:         Each year the Academy of Music and Dance showcases students' talent and hard work in a professional performance.  Working towards a performance with a group is an experience every dancer should have\, as it builds the skills for team work\, as well as encourages each student to work towards an individual and group goal.    For any student young or old\, performing is often their favorite part of the year. The joy of sharing what they’ve worked for all year\, and the magic of the costumes\, lights\, and stage\, inspire dancers to continue on with their goals\, and enjoy what they’ve accomplished so far. Set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City\, this romantic comedy\, which opened on Broadway in 1950\, introduces us to a cast of vivid characters: Sarah Brown\, the upright but uptight "mission doll\," out to reform the evildoers of Time Square; Sky Masterson\, the slick\, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide\, the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact she's been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit\, her devoted fiancé\, desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating crap game. Revivals followed\, as did the 1962 film adaptation and a 2003 television remake.    The show sees Harold Hill\, posing as a band leader who sells band instruments and uniforms to naive townsfolk before skipping town with the cash. Prim librarian and piano teacher Marian Paroo sees through him\, but when Harold helps her younger brother overcome his fear of social interactions\, Marian begins to fall in love with the con man\, as he in turn falls for Marian\, risking being caught in his efforts to win her.    The Shakespeare Club was founded in 1888 and is the oldest women’s club in California. For the past 50 years\, the Club has staged professionally directed musicals in aid of local charities.

DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles Theatre Organ Society promotes the preservation of theatre organs such as the Playhouse's 1927 Wurlitzer organ and regularly presents concerts and events featuring these beautiful historic instruments.    This afternoon's concert features Orchestral Transcriptions by World renowned organist Jonas Nordwall.  An international virtuoso organist equally skilled in both traditional classical and modern/popular schools of musical performance\, Nordwall has performed in North America\, Japan\, Europe\, and China and has made eight concert tours to Australia.    He is the only organist to play a public recital on the famous concert organ in Sydney’s Town Hall to an audience of more than 2000 that was also broadcast by the Australian Broadcasting Company. In 1999\, he was an adjudicator and guest recitalist for the Swiss International Organ Competition in Geneva\, Switzerland.    Nordwall has performed numerous programs on the world-famous Spreckels outdoor pipe organ in San Diego’s Balboa Park for their International Artist Series. He has more than 30 highly acclaimed recordings on a variety of labels. His recordings are frequently heard on the syndicated radio show\, Pipedreams. Notable national television appearances include the Today Show and Good Morning Australia.

DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2009\, the Pasadena Master Chorale is one of Pasadena's newest and most vibrant arts organizations. An amateur choir with professional standards\, PMC presents well-loved and affordable concerts of the highest quality to the greater Pasadena community.    In this concert\, PMC join forces with the Los Angeles Daiku Orchestra to perform Beethoven's 9th. His last complete symphony composed in 1824\, this inspiring work is based on Frederick Schiller's  Ode to Joy.         Krystle Casey (soprano) Jessica Mamey (mezzo-soprano)Arthur Rishi (tenor) Cedric Berry (baritone)    Conducted by Jeffrey Bernstein    Specializing in the pinnacles of choral music spanning five centuries\, PMC has thrilled audiences with recent performances of Orff's Carmina Burana\, Brahms's Ein Deutsches Requiem\, a folksong program entitled Songs of the World\, and a Renaissance program entitled The Golden Age. PMC is also committed to engaging Pasadena's young choral singers and fostering their love of the choral art. Through partnerships with four PUSD schools\, PMC offers performance opportunities to dozens of Pasadena students each year\, including a vocal competition and a mentoring program that pairs student singers with experienced chorale members. From a first season of 3 concerts in 2008-2009\, PMC has grown rapidly\, presenting 11 performances of 7 programs in its third season (2010-2011). SUMMARY:San Gabriel Chinese Opera presents Ba Yi Tu 
DESCRIPTION:San Gabriel Chinese Opera Association presents Ba Yi Tu\, based on a history play written in the second half of the 13th Century with the action taking place in the Epoch of Spring and Autumn (722-476 bc). The play's full name is The Great Revenge of the Orphan of the Zhao Family.  With loyalty as it's central theme\, the Opera tells the story of how the hero sacrifices his son to save the life of young Zhao\, so that Zhao can later avenge the death of his family.    Cited as the first Chinese play ever to be known in Europe\, Ba Yi Tu was translated into French and English in the 18th Century and was adapted into a feature film in 2010 by director Chen Kaige under the title Sacrifice.    San Gabriel Chinese Opera Association was established in 1997 to promote Chinese performing arts and to improve cultural exchange between the United States and Taiwan/China.

SUMMARY:TheatreWorks USA presents Charlotte's Web
DESCRIPTION:Based on E.B. White's classic book which has been read by generations of children since it first appeared in 1952 and remains a favorite today.    The story opens on a farm with the birth of a litter of pigs. The farmer\, Mr. Arable\, is about to destroy the tiniest one\, but is stopped by the pleading of his young daughter\, Fern. She takes over the bottle-feeding and special care required for such a little pig -whom she names "Wilbur" - and the pig flourishes. Now that Wilbur is growing\, Mr. Arable must sell him - but\, again at Fern's urging\, the pig is sold to her Uncle Homer Zuckerman. Since the Zuckerman's farm is just down the road\, Fern can still visit him often.    On the Zuckerman's farm\, Wilbur meets many new animals but without Fern around as much\, he admits to feeling lonely. One night\, a voice answers his wishes\, and promises to be his friend. The next morning\, he finds out that the voice belongs to a beautiful grey spider named Charlotte. Although Wilbur is nervous about trusting this new acquaintance\, he soon learns that Charlotte is his loyal and true friend when she devises a plan to save him from his inevitable trip to the slaughterhouse. Through her talent at weaving words into her web\, and her sacrificing of most of her energy to do so\, she convinces "the people" that Wilbur is "some pig\," and he is insured a long life in the barnyard. SUMMARY:Los Angeles Theatre Organ Society presents Mark Herman
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1987\, Mark Herman has been studying the piano since he was seven years old and began classical organ lessons at the age of twelve. His first introduction to the theatre organ was when he was in fourth grade and was at the Embassy Theatre in downtown Fort Wayne. This was made possible by the late Robert Goldstine and the local American Guild of Organists chapter’s Room on the Organ Bench program. In 2001\, he began theatre organ studies with John Ferguson of Indianapolis\, who is recognized worldwide for his skills as a teacher.    In 2003\, Mark played a cameo performance at the American Theatre Organ Society’s (ATOS) annual convention in Oakland\, California. In 2004\, he won the ATOS Young Theatre Organist Competition in Milwaukee at the Riverside Theatre. That enabled him to perform a critically acclaimed concert for the ATOS 50th Anniversary Convention in Pasadena in the following July. During 2006\, he toured for 6 weeks in Australia and New Zealand\, setting records in CD sales at many of the venues in which he appeared. In 2009\, he returned for a second 7-week tour of those countries.    He has played dozens of solo concerts in theatres and venues from coast to coast. Lee  Music by Richard Rodgers  Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II  Book by David Henry Hwang    In this Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic\, Mei‐Li flees communist China and finds herself in San Francisco’s Chinatown. This naïve young refugee is befriended by Wang\, who is struggling to keep the Chinese opera tradition alive despite his son’s determination to turn the old opera house into a swingin’ Western‐style nightclub.    The unique blending of American razz‐ma‐tazz and stylized Chinese opera traditions creates a beautiful theatrical tapestry in this lovely American classic. Hits include the classics I Enjoy Being A Girl and Chop Suey.

SUMMARY:Los Angeles Theatre Organ Society presents Walter Strony
DESCRIPTION:One of America's premier concert organists\, Walter Strony made his public debut in 1974 at the age of 18 and has since established himself as one of few organists equally at home playing both theatre and classical organ. He has performed hundreds of concerts from coast to coast in the United States as well as in Japan\, Australia\, England\, and Canada. In addition\, Strony has performed at many conventions of the American Theatre Organ Society and the American Guild of Organists.    This concert on the fully restored 1920's Wurlitzer Pipe Organ will feature selections ranging from Broadway show tunes\, Hollywood's finest films\, novelty tunes from the 1920's and selections from some of today's most popular composers. SUMMARY:AATF presents A Celebration of Asian Dance
DESCRIPTION:    AATF is a non-profit organization established in 2003 by a group of professional performers passionate about both eastern and western cultures. The Foundation aims to raise funds to support Asian arts\, education\, and culture\, sponsor public performances\, offer grants and scholarships for talented young Asians worldwide\, help and get involved with the community during disasters and catastrophes and organize summer activities for young people. The Foundation is actively involved with the local community and has received awards for its work both here and internationally.    This celebration of Asian dance features a stunning range of artists showcasing a fascinating diversity of genres from Hip-Hop to Ballet and includes performances by the Hikari Taiko Drummers\, the Korean Dance Academy\, Ling’s Ballet Academy and the Wat Thai Temple of LA.
